Trench – Scarification | perthmusic
I almost didn’t rip this CD and post is simply because if you go into basically ANY Cash Converters in Perth you can buy a copy for a buck. This is no mean feat seeing this record came out sometime around 1995. The band flooded, and I mean FLOODED Cashies with their debut and perhaps only album with hundreds of copies over the years. At one point there must have been 30 of them on the racks in the Osborne Park cashies and every other secondhand store within a 20km radius had a few as well. I went into the Mandurah store over xmas this year and they had 2 copies. That aside this is a fairly decent 90s metal record, much in the vein of the first Allegiance album I guess. I never saw them play live that I recall but they shout the usual 90′s metal bands from Perth in the liner notes such as SFD, Nebula, Downer, Grimoire, Choke etc. Lead guitarist ‘Ershon’ was a year above me in high school and as far as I remember was about the most metal dude I’d ever seen by the time he was 15. Strangely this year at Churchlands High was also shared by Karl Smith from Thermos Cardy/Sodastream. You couldn’t get further apart musically if you tried. Anyway here is the record ‘Scarification’. Enjoy.
The Fuzz
The Fuzz were four piece rock band from Perth, Western Australia comprising of KT Rumble (Douglas May) (guitar), Shayne Macri (bass) and Ben Mountford (drums) with Abbe May added as vocals. Growing up in Bunbury, Western Australia, they played together during high school and went on to win the WA leg of Triple J Unearthed in 2002 with the track ‘ The Bomb ‘. Here’s the EP with that track on it.
W.A Gold Compilation
This is a compilation from 2008 put together by the nice chaps in Project Mayhem. The artwork tells the story. Click any of the images to download it.
SLAM – Supporting Local Alternative Music
This is a 1999 compilation from S.L.A.M, an organisation who put on a load of great shows around Perth in the 90’s and 00’s. I believe it was run by Steve from Atmosfear. This one contains music from Wax Tadpole (the first thing we’ve had up from them bizarrely), Stoneface, Atmosfear, Thumb, Greenroom, F.U.L.L, Spyder Moe, Troutman, D’Karn and a whole load more great bands from the mid to late 90’s Perth scene. Some of them are making their first appearance on the site via this great compilation. Click the cover art to download it.

Klippspringer
I know very little about these guys but here’s a nice 5 tracker called ‘Employee Of The Month’.
O!
Here we have 2 records from the wonderfully bizarre O! They have a bandcamp page up here . O! was active in the Perth indi-rock scene from 1990 to 1997, part of Chapter Music’s early years. Members went on to play in bands such as Adam Said Galore, Mukaisake, Tucker B’s, Harry Smith, Umpire, 10 Bit Tonsil and Catherine Traicos and the Starry Night. Their first LP was called Sporco and came out in 1994. Next up came ‘Morass of Shiny Cudgels’ in 1997. Click either covers to grab them both.
A letter from a reader..
I don’t know what to say about this so I’m putting it here in a hope of inciting some discussion. A bit before my time really. This was emailed in. Thanks John! A few thoughts about the beginning of punk in W.A, by John Hondros. Bilbo played together from 1969 – 1971. They were regulars at dances and an occasional pub but never really broke through as their “punk” sound and long extemporisations had yet to find a musical home. The band consisted of Paul Blackbee on guitar, Johnno Podmore drums and John Hondros on bass. Ironically their biggest success came at their last impromptu performance at the James St Art Tech “Rock it Out” dance attended by the art and music fraternity of Perth at the end of 1971. Paul Blackbee managed to talk the night’s lead band (Fatty Lumpkin) into letting them hand over their instruments during a break and it went on from there with nearly 20 minutes of solid “new wave” sound until the guys from FL stepped in to end it. The crowd was not happy it ended and FL were not happy to follow what they thought would be a disaster. In a moment of ironic brilliance Paul Blackbee renamed the band (that up until then had been Thrash for the previous 18 months or so) as Bilbo (playing on Fatty Lumpkins use of a Tolkien name). The audience raged. In the good old techy art way the crowd loved it but howled down the lead band for ending Bilbo Baggins. It was one of those nights musos spoke of for months. Anyway, Johnno Podmore went on and did some drumming with the Troubadours and then many other NSW pub bands. Paul Blackbee later joined the “Swinging Blue Jeans” playing sax, I believe. John
RTRFM Siamese Dream guest appearance.
Last week (07th Jan ’16) I was lucky enough to be invited onto the Siamese Dream show on RTRFM! I co-hosted the show with Jesse Yuen and we had a great chat about this site, and played some of my favourite jams from the blog. Thanks to Jesse and all those who tuned in. Here’s the audio.
Snowman
Snowman were a band originally from Perth , Western Australia. They relocated to London in 2008, and disbanded in 2011. Their Wikipedia has a great deal of information about them. Here’s two records from them. Snowman was released on 23 September 2006 on Dot Dash Recordings to positive reviews. Singles, ‘Smoke & Mirrors’, ‘You Are A Casino’ and ‘Swimming With Sharks’ were all added to high rotation on Triple J . The album was a local music feature on community radio stations RTRfm in Perth and FBI in Sydney. They toured Australia extensively in the year that followed, playing the national Big Day Out tour, Meredith Music Festival, Laneway Festivals, and supported Liars , Wolf & Cub and The Drones on their respective national tours. Several headline tours soon followed with supports from (the then lesser known) The Temper Trap , and New Zealanders, Batrider. At the 2007 WAMi Awards Snowman won three WAMI awards for ‘Most Popular Album’ ( Snowman ), ‘Most Popular Music Video’ (“You Are A Casino”) and ‘Best Rock Act’. “You Are A Casino” was released as a limited 7″ single in the UK on 25 June 2007 on the Passport Label, through Forte Distribution Click the artwork to get yourself some download action. The Horse, The Rat and The Swan is the second studio album for Perth band, Snowman . It was released on 24 May 2008 on Dot Dash Recordings . Snowman produced the album with Dave Parkin ( The Panda Band , Red Jezebel ) at Blackbird Studios in Perth, Western Australia . In an interview lead singer, Joe McKee, explains the reasoning behind the name of the album. The Horse, the Rat and the Swan are three different characters and themes that reoccur in the album. The Horse represents the apocalypse, the
